In November 2015, Mildred’s Umbrella joined theaters, libraries, and colleges nationwide in the simultaneous staged reading of The Other Woman, a full-length, one-act play adapted from five essays appearing in the bestselling anthology The Other Woman: Twenty-one Wives, Lovers, and Others Talk Openly About Sex, Deception, Love, and Betrayal. MU is proud to be one of the 22 diverse organizations in 14 states chosen to participate by co-producers Cynthia Comsky and Victoria Zackheim (anthology editor and playwright).
The Other Woman tells the stories of five women with very different viewpoints and experiences around infidelity. Authors whose work appears in the play are Caroline Leavitt, Aviva Layton, Mary Jo Eustace, Connie May Fowler, and Maxinne Rhea Leighton. The play’s first reading took place at the Players Club in Manhattan, with parts read by Kathleen Chalfant, Ellen McLaughlin, Penny Fuller, Winslow Corbett, and Connie May Fowler.
Directed by MU company member, Bree Bridger, the reading reflected on MU’s mission to bring new works to the stage while empowering women through the performing arts. According to MU Artistic Director, Jennifer Decker, “This reading is a fantastic opportunity to join with organizations across the country and demonstrate that while we are all so very different, we can all speak in one voice.”
